Harakd den Breejen
Harald den Breejen is a Dutch artist that creates or uses objects as ‘conversation pieces’. The dialogue that ensues completes the work, transforming it from an object to part of an extended cultural and social network. Harald’s work and the social situations he creates are often humorous and always intriguing. The dryness of analytical thought is juxtaposed with the comedy that is our human subjectivity. Harald is particularly interested in the overlap between art and philosophy, as a founding member of the Centre for Philosophy and Visual Arts in London.
Conversation pieces have included handmade clay pipes depicting the artists face, the relocation of Robert Scott’s failed expedition across the Antarctic to the Dutch countryside and a collection of 200 books that all featured a character called John. In Jersey he began by using a grandfather clock to explore how different working conditions affect an individuals world view, which led to an interest in local identity and the creation of a new pattern for a knitted Jersey Jumper with ‘One Stitch For All’.
