Jonathan Trayte
Jonathan Trayte is a sculptor and designer. He has also worked as a chef, run his own British seafood market and worked at a bronze foundry and fabrication workshop. Jonathan’s sculptural work is informed by our global language of consumption and consumerism. Glossy synthetic skins of paint give his work a colourful pop status, a chameleon appearance and an almost edible quality.
Jonathan Trayte was born in 1980 in Huddersfield, UK. He received a BFA from the University of the Creative Arts Canterbury in 2004 and a postgraduate degree in Fine Art from Royal Academy Schools in 2010. Trayte’s work has been included in numerous international exhibitions. Recent solo exhibitions include Fruiting Habits, Friedman Benda, New York (2018), SCHUSSBOOMER, Castor Projects, London (2017-18); Polyculture, The Tetley, Leeds, UK (2016); Experiments in Consuming, The Kings School, Canterbury, UK (2016); Pazar, Marcelle Joseph Projects and Istanbul Art Project, Istanbul, Turkey (2014). In 2016 Jonathan designed the pop-up café MILK at Christies, in collaboration with fashion designer Kit Neale. He has been awarded the Fashion Arts Foundation Award by the British Fashion Council (2016) and was the recipient of the Time Out Istanbul Residency in Turkey (2014).
